During his professional career, Carel has practiced woodturning on a part time basis but is now doing this on a fulltime basis since the beginning of 2018. Together with creating his own artistic works, he is also offering training courses in woodturning as well as specialised woodturning tools and equipment. During his numerous international travels he trained with some of the world leading woodturners in the UK and Germany. His primary passion is to explore the natural beauty of wood and to create features from the natural flaws in the wood. He is well known for his hollow forms and natural edge bowls.
With his training with international masters, he has also started to enhance the hidden features of light coloured woods by means of colouring and surface decoration. This has gained him the first prize at the 2016 Symposium of the South African Association of Woodturners. The theme was an enhanced sphere which was won with his work titled "The New World Symphony"
In 2017 he was awarded the first prize for his piece "Broken Perfection" at the Exhibition of the Pretoria Woodworkers Association
In 2018 he was again awarded first prize at the Symposium of the South African Association of Woodturners with his piece "Earth, Wind and Fire". The piece "Pained Feathers" was awarded second prize at the same Symposium.
In 2019 an article about his work appeared in the magazine Woodsa. He was also awarded the third prize at the Symposium of the South African Association of Woodturners with his piece "Ode to San" in the category "Spirit of Africa"
